Lessons on harp are available to students with no experience on the harp to active harpists. Students can choose to study on folk harp or pedal harp. I teach many different styles of music from classical to folk to popular. At Casper College, the harp students get individualized instruction and attention. Casper College provides practice harps for students without harps of their own.

Casper College offers a unique opportunity to make music in a small and nurturing environment. Virtually all students participating in the music program (major and non-major alike) receive significant scholarships. The clarinet/saxophone studio welcomes students of all ages, abilities, and majors. As a group, we attend regional conferences and festivals. The Concert Band is open to all students and performs new and classic works from the band repertoire. The Wind Ensemble is a fast-paced and challenging ensemble open by open audition only. Jazz Ensemble I performs theme concerts every semester and frequently works with guest artists, including headliners at the Kinser Jazz Festival. Jazz Ensemble I is open to students and community members alike.
Instructor of Percussion
The CC Music Department offers a personalized and affordable education. The percussion studio offers world-class instruction in all areas of percussion supported by an inventory of professional-quality percussion instruments housed in world-class practice and rehearsal facilities. We host many internationally renowned guest artists each semester to work with our students and perform for them.
Casper College's voice area helps to develop your instrument and confidence in singing from day one! When you participate in our ensembles and solo performances, you get to apply all of the technical and musical knowledge you will learn from your lessons! We will embark on a journey to improve general vocal technique, including range, projection, languages, performance aspects, and general confidence. Although we primarily focus on classical technique, in addition to opera and art song, our students regularly perform folk songs, jazz, and musical theatre repertoire. Our former students have gone on to complete their degrees around the nation and many are working as educators and performers. Between studio performance classes, student and studio recitals, there are many performance opportunities beyond the choral experience available to you as a solo singer! My passion is helping people to discover their authentic and healthy voices, while strengthening the performer that lives inside each of us! Although I am originally from a small rural town in northern Montana with little exposure to classical music, I have completed a BM in vocal performance at University of Denver, an MM in vocal performance from University of Montana, and the coursework for a DMA in vocal performance from the University of Nebraska. Prior to teaching at Casper College, I taught at both Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO and Concordia University in Seward, NE. I have performed solo recitals both around the USA and internationally, and have performed lead roles in several opera productions, including Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Puccini's Suor Angelica. In addition to applied voice lessons, I also teach Introduction to Music, Music Fundamentals, Vocal Diction, and Opera Workshop. Come see what we are about!
Guitarists and bassists flourish at Casper College with our unique ensemble opportunities and small class sizes. In the studio we will study everything from classical to jazz to contemporary; everything to position yourself for a great career as a performer or an educator.
I am so thrilled to get to work in such an amazing facility with such wonderful and talented faculty!
I pride myself on extensive performing and teaching experience. I bring to the music department a long history of successfully developing trumpet players with solid fundamentals, an understanding of music making, and a love of music.
Chamber Orchestra Director, teaches violin and also serves as the Music Department Program Director
Casper College has so much to offer a young string player. Our well qualified faculty will give you a personalized approach to your musical education. String players gain large ensemble skills in our Chamber Orchestra and also learn how to play chamber music. The strings studio meets for regular studio classes where students gain valuable performance skills and gain feedback from instructors and peers.
Our world class practice and rehearsal facilities offer you an inspiring environment to hone your skills. I am available to show you the facilities and give you a trial lesson, either in person or remotely.
If you have any questions about preparing your audition, please do not hesitate to contact me: jcowell@caspercollege.edu
I look forward to meeting you, working with you and helping you reach your musical goals! I am confident that we can help you achieve success. I hope to see you at Casper College.
